Russians Full of Cheer at IBU Cup

Ekaterina Glazyrina made the Russian team cheer once again today at the IBU Cup 3. She won in 22:30.8, with clean shooting, 9.6 seconds ahead of Juliya Dhzyma of Ukraine who also shot clean. Third place went to Sabrina Buchholz of Germany with one penalty, 14 seconds back.

Garanichev Sprints to Victory

Evgeniy Garanichev of Russia won the men’s 10K sprint at IBU Cup 3 in Obertilliach after scorching the last lap. He finished 24:09.7, with one penalty. Second place went to Germany’s Daniel Böhm, with perfect shooting, 1.7 seconds back. Nathan Smith of Canada in third place, also shooting clean, was the surprise of today, 8.7 seconds back.

Russia Takes IBU Cup Mixed Relay

Russia won an exciting mixed relay today in 1:14:47.9 closely followed by Norway, 25.7 seconds back and Italy, 26.9 seconds back. While Russia had three penalties and six spare rounds, Norway used six spare rounds while Italy needed eleven.

Mixed Relay Tomorrow in Obertilliach

The preparations for the 2013 the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships are well under way by the looks of the biathlon stadium in Obertilliach. This year, the officials and teams are already enjoying the good conditions, with this IBU Cup 3 starting exceptionally early this week with the mixed relay on Wednesday.

Germany and Russia Dominate Sprint

Only Germany and Russia were the only teams present at the flower ceremony for the women’s 7.5K sprint today in Ridnaun, Italy. Three Germans and three Russians divided the first six places among themselves with Sabrina Buchholz as the winner. Second place went to Ekaterina Shumilova of Russia ahead of German Nadine Horchler.

Beatrix Wins 20K individual in Ridnaun

This afternoon at the IBU Cup 2 in Ridnaun the men’s 20k individual competition took center stage. Contrary to the women’s 15K in the morning, it was not necessary to be flawless at the shooting range in order to reach the top. In fact, only one man in the top 6 shot clean. The winner was Jean Guillaume Beatrix of France with two penalties in 50:36.8. Second was Alexey Volkov of Russia, who matched Beatrix at the shooting range but was 20.2 seconds back. His teammate Sergey Klyachin finished third with one penalty, 26.6 seconds back.

Perfect Shooting to a Victory

Anastasia Zagoruiko of Russia won the women’s 15K individual in 48:08.4 at IBU Cup 2 in Ridnaun. She stayed perfect at the shooting range, just like Paulina Bobak in second place. The Polish woman was 20.1 seconds behind Zagoruiko. Third went to another Russian Ekaterina Glazyrina, with one penalty, 56.9 seconds back.

Snow Just in Time for IBU Cup 2

A 2.5K loop was prepared with artificial snow in Ridnaun, Italy that many athletes used for training in the last few days. However, snow arrived last night just in time for the IBU Cup 2 this weekend, creating a picture perfect scene at the top of this scenic valley.

Carl Johan Bergman Stuns Sprint Field

Clean-shooting Carl Johan Bergman of Sweden stunned the big stars this afternoon by taking the men’s 10K sprint in 24:22.5, at the Östersund E.ON IBU World Cup Biathlon. Tarjei Boe of Norway in second place also shot clean, but was 7.6 seconds back, followed by his teammate Emil Hegle Svendsen, with one penalty, 13 seconds back.
