On the Road for August Training

August is traditionally the month when almost every team is on the road for extended training camps before the cooler days of fall roll in. This year was no exception with many teams holding extended training camps far from their home base, making the most out of the waning days of summer.

Canadians Find Summer Snow in New Zealand

Summer training usually means cycling, running, rollerskiing combo workouts and hiking in shorts and t-shirts. However for the past 3 weeks, the Canadian Eh! (A) Team has been bundled up like in winter gear, skiing on natural snow at New Zealand's Snow Farm in the Southern Alps.

Weronika Nowakowska: Time at Home, Twins on the Way

July usually means another trip to a training camp for Weronika Nowakowska and her Polish teammates. However, this July finds Nowakowska at home in Duzniki Zdrój, spending the afternoon visiting her grandmother and getting advice; the 30-year-old biathlete is expecting twin boys in mid-September."She always gives me advice; today it was, 'eat more since you are eating for three,' and of course she sent some food home with me!"

A Sunny Training Day with Marie and Simon

A few days before heading to Norway for a team training camp and the Blink festival races, Marie Dorin Habert and Simon Fourcade are at "home," rollerskiing on the trails at sun-drenched Correncon-en-Vercors. It is just another normal day when not in a training camp for these two residents of Villard de Lans, France, just 5 km down the valley.

Belchenko and Maier: Top Women in IBU Junior Cup

Unlike the men's IBU Junior Cup Total Score, where the top places were filled by athletes from the strongest biathlon nations: Germany's Dominic Reiter, and Russia's Kirill Streltsov and Nikita Porshnev; the women's Total Score everything was more unpredictable. Darya Blashko from Belarus won the title, followed by Elizaveta Belchenko of Kazakhstan and Germany's Christin Maier.

Marriage for Dasha and Ole Einar

Late last Saturday evening, a single photo announced the "biathlon wedding of the year," Darya Domracheva and Ole Einar Björndalen were now man and wife. The photo was accompanied with a single line, "What a nice day."

Martin and Friends: Cycling the Long Road to Gavarnie

An almost clear sky at sunrise was a nice change from the previous rainy day as Martin Fourcade and three friends set out at 8 am on an out-and–back cycling tour of almost 100 km through the Pyrenees. The planned trip from Argeles Gazost to the top of the Gavarnie Col de Tentes at 2208 meters would be Fourcade's second big cycling tour of high peaks in the past four days. Just three days prior, he had cycled about 90 km to the top of the legendary Col du Tourmalet, just a day after the Tour de France had passed over one of the hardest climbs of the 23-day event.

Cows, Rain, One Fan and a Long Uphill for Martin

It is 9:15 AM and the streets of the small of Pierrefitte-Nestalas in the French Pyrenees are quiet, except for one sound, the "clack, clack, clack" of Martin Fourcade's ski poles as they hit the pavement. Ahead is a solitary 19K uphill trek to Lac d'Estaing, climbing from 460 meters to 1163 meters, followed by a fast downhill through rural France on a single lane road; just another day at the summer office for the top-ranked biathlete in the world.

June Camps: Cycling, Kayaking, Hiking in the Summer Sun

May marked the start of training for the new season. Now, with summer officially here as of June 20; the "sunshine season" began along with another step in the training cycle for many teams; the first longer camps away from home with a few twists to the traditional running/shooting routine.

A Big Season for Russian Juniors Streltsov and Porshnev

Consistent hard work is the key to success for any athlete hoping to reach the highest level in any sport. However, not every sport provides the opportunity for young athletes to compete and gain experience against their international peers on a regular basis. Yet in biathlon, the newly created IBU Junior Cup fills this gap with a program comparable to the World Cup and IBU Cup. These competitions give the brightest stars of the future international experience at the highest level, taking them one step closer to the "big-time" World Cup and major championships. Two young Russian men Kirill Streltsov and Nikita Porshnev were among the brightest stars last season in the IBU Junior Cup.
