Russian biathlete Alina Yakimkina died unexpectedly of heart failure on February 21st during a Cup of Russia competition in Tyumen. Doctors were immediately on hand, but were unable to revive her. The 21-year-old was a member of the Udmurt Republic team.

Pizza Time with Doro, Nadezhda and Luki

The most universally known and loved Italian dish today is surely pizza. It comes in many variations, but the basics are the same; crust and toppings, baked in an oven. During this week in Antholz, what would more appropriate than getting a couple of the Italian Biathletes to show how pizza is made in the South Tyrol. Then add in a Belarusian with Italian heritage and see how much fun three athletes can have making a pizza from scratch at Dorothea Wierer's home in Rasun.

Sigi Heinrich: Biathlon and Bison Burgers

Eurosport Biathlon commentator Sigi Heinrich is well known for his love of sports but also his love of food. Near the end of last season, he figured out a way to combine these two passions, a biathlon cookbook! His compilation of recipes from a wide range of well-known biathletes “Kulinarisch Volle Treffer” was published last month. Double Olympic Gold Medalist Kuzmina Pregnant
Slovakia's Anastasiya Kuzmina, the Olympic Sprint Gold medalist in the past two Olympic Winter Games announced today in a press conference in home town of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia that she is three months pregnant and will miss the current biathlon season.

France, Belarus, Czech & More: Alfred Eder Interview

The teams from France and Czech Republic finished fifth and seventh, respectively in the Nations Cup for both men and women. Yet these two teams were big players for the whole 2013-14 biathlon season, while adding to their reputations at the Sochi OWG. Likewise, the 6th place Belarusian women, now coached by Alfred Eder should maintain their ranking and none other than Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen should again contend for the Total Score title.

Germany finished second and third in the Women and Men's Nations Cup last season; the days of domination of virtually every seasonal category in biathlon are past. Yet, at the same time, both teams remain a force in the sport, just not at the level of several years ago. This year should be another solid season for the men with a returning squad of reliable veterans, while the women face a challenge with a cast of younger women and not returning stars, save the returning–from-injury Miriam Gössner.
