Nove Mesto Wrap-up with Kaisa, Dasha and Jakov

This weekend in Nove Mesto na Morave was quite a show with over 100,000 wildly enthusiastic spectators in three days; a 3-day biathlon record for a World Cup. The weather was great for 2 days and completely fell apart today. Still the athletes had some great competitions and enjoyed this special place. In our “Nove Mesto Wrap-up with Kaisa, Dasha and Jakov,” three of the stars talk about the atmosphere and the competitions.

Second NMNM Victory for Jakov Fak

Jakov Fak of Slovenia led from start to finish in taking his second victory in a row here in Nove Mesto na Morave. He covered the 12.5K pursuit in 37:24.9, with one penalty. Germany's Simon Schempp finished second also with one penalty, 4.4 seconds back, while Martin Fourcade of France finished third, shooting clean, 13.3 seconds back. Fourth went to Ukraine's Sergey Semenov, who shot clean 20.3 seconds back while Canada's Nathan Smith finished fifth, also shooting clean, 24.1 seconds back. Evgeniy Garanichev of Russia finished sixth, with one penalty, 45.6 seconds back.

Birkeland and Horchler Win IBU Cup Pursuits

Lars Helge Birkeland of Norway scored his second victory in a row, winning the men's pursuit in 39:09.5. In the earlier competition, Karolin Horchler of Germany scored her first individual career victory and her first podium of the season in 33:01.3. She started the competition with bib number 9 and was the only athlete who shot clean, allowing her to move higher and higher after the each shooting stage and to finish first in the end.

Domracheva Wins Weather Battle in Pursuit

Darya Domracheva of Belarus over came blizzard conditions to win the women's pursuit in 35:22.3, with four penalties. Yellow-Bib wearing Kaisa Mäkäräinen of Finland finished second also with four penalties, 6.8 seconds back. Sprint winner Laura Dahlmeier of Germany finished third, with three penalties, 14.9 seconds back. Fourth went to Dahlmeier's teammate Vanessa Hinz, with two penalties, 24 seconds back. Local favorite Gabriela Soukalova finished fifth, also with two penalties, 3.2 seconds back. Ekaterina Glazyrina of Russia finished sixth, with three penalties, 34.5 seconds back.

Jakov Fak Sprints to Victory

Slovenia's Jakov Fak won for the first time this season and the fifth time in his career by taking the men's 10K sprint in 24:09. Germany's Simon Schempp finished second, 12.8 seconds back while France's Jean Guillaume Beatrix, 26 seconds back finished third. All of the men on the podium shot clean. France's Martin Fourcade, wearing the Yellow Bib finished fourth, with a single standing penalty, just .3 seconds behind his teammate. Fifth went to local favorite Michal Slesingr, who shot clean, another .4 seconds back. Russia's Anton Shipulin also shot clean but finished sixth, 29.5 seconds back.

Birkeland and Nechkasova Win Sprints

Lars Helge Birkeland of Norway took revenge for the lost medal in the pursuit at the OECH in Otepää and won the men's sprint in 24:01.2. Earlier in the day, Galina Nechkasova of Russia won the women sprint 7.5K in Osrblie with one penalty and scored her first podium in season in 21:04.7. After the second shooting she was fourth with 7.9 seconds from the leader, but with a strong last loop she made it to the first at finish. Despite on the same good conditions as in the morning for the 88 men, who started the competition, the shooting was not as good as the women.

First Victory for Dahlmeier in Sprint

Germany's Laura Dahlmeier, who missed several World Cups earlier in the season due to an injury, scored her first World Cup victory today taking the women's 7.5K sprint in 21:33.4. Second place went to her teammate Franziska Hildebrand, one second back. Both women shot clean. Veronika Vitkova of Czech Republic finished third, with one penalty, 13.9 seconds back. Darya Domracheva of Belarus finished fourth, with two penalties, 23 seconds back while France's Marie Dorin Habert finished fifth, 26.9 seconds back ,a also with two penalties. Valja Semerenko of Ukraine finished sixth, with one penalty, 28.8 seconds back. Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen wearing the Yellow Bib finished seventh, with three penalties, 30.5 seconds back.

Norwegian Victory in Mixed Relay

The Norwegian Team of Fanny Welle-Strand Horn, Tiril Eckhoff, Johannes Thingnes Boe and Tarjei Boe won a dramatic mixed relay this evening in 1:12:49.2 with six spare rounds. They finished just 4.1 seconds ahead of the home team Czech Republic, with five spare rounds. Third went to Ukraine, 1:21.3 back, with a penalty and seven spares. Russia finished fourth, France fifth and Germany in sixth.

Russian Victory in Inaugural Single Mixed Relay

Russia's Yana Romanova and Alexey Volkov won the inaugural official single mixed relay today in 35:43.5, with five spare rounds. Volkov did not take the lead for good until the final standing stage that he cleaned with five shots. Second place went to Norway, with three spare rounds, 21.5 seconds back. Ukraine with eight spare rounds finished third, 24.6 seconds back. Germany finished fourth, with France in fifth and Sweden in sixth place.
