Gold for Russia in Junior Mixed Relay

The Russian team of Uliana Kaisheva, Victoria Slivko, Dmitrii Shamaev and Alexander Povarnitsyn won the mixed relay Gold medal in 1:15:24.0, with 9 spares and one penalty lap. France was second with one penalty and five spares, 8.2 seconds back. Ukraine finished third, using 7 spare rounds, 39.8 seconds behind. Austria finished fourth, Estonia fifth, and Poland sixth.

Gold for Russia’s Slepov and Latypov in Pursuits

Alexey Slepov of Russia scored his second victory in a row in men's pursuit 12.5K in 33:21.0. His great speed on the tracks and 3 penalties on the shooting range allowed him to finish with a flag, as Ekaterina Shumilova did few hours before. A little more than an hour after Slepov won gold, his junior teammate Eduard Latypov won his second medal and first Gold at the IBU OECH in junior men's pursuit in 35:19.5. This was despite his six penalties and second position after the last standing. The weather conditions have changed a little before the men started. The wind gusts on the shooting range were still hard, but the snow stopped, making the skiing easier.

IBU OECH Pursuits to Shumilova and Merkushyna

Russia's Ekaterina Shumilova moved from third in the sprint to first in today's women's 10K pursuit competition in 33:07.4, while Anastasiya Merkushyna of Ukraine scored her second win in a row, winning the junior pursuit in 35:52.9. Shumilova had two penalties while Merkushyna had with four in the junior competition. Strong and gusty winds have become a part and parcel for the IBU OECH in Otepää. The fifth day of competition, with four pursuits on the schedule, brought more snow as well. The combination of these two factors made it a tough day for everyone on the racks and the shooting range.

Varcin and Slepov Win IBU OECH Sprints

Coline Varcin of France needed 20:26.4 to claim her first career win with an IBU OECH sprint title while Alexey Slepov of Russia won men's 10K sprint in 22:38.0. Both shot clean. Varcin was just 17th in the individual competition with seven penalties, but today due to perfect shooting she had her personal best. Slepov with one victory and two second places in sprints on IBU Cups this season showed, unusual for him, perfect shooting, great speed on the last loop to finish first.

Merkushyna and Claude Wins IBU OECH Junior Sprints

Anastasiya Merkushyna of Ukraine and Fabien Claude of France won the Gold medals, both with clean shooting in today's junior sprints at the IBU OECH. Merkushyna who had an IBU Cup podium and competed on the World Cup circuit this season won her title in 21:56.3. Claude, Fabien Claude of France claimed his first victory in the season in the junior men's 10K in 24:26.4. The third day of competitions at the IBU Open European Championships in cloudy Otepää brought less wind and more clean shooting in both competitions.

Volkov and Piscoran Win IBU OECH Gold

On a very windy day, Russia's Olympic Champion Alexey Volkov and Luminita Piscoran of Romania won Gold medals in the 20K and 15K individual competitions. Volkov with his first individual podium of the season had two penalties in the last standing stage but still won in 53:23.2. Earlier in the day, Luminita Piscoran of Romania with a personal best result personal best today, won her Gold medal with 5 penalties in 51:15.7. It was not just the first individual medal for Piscoran, but the first podium ever for Romania at the IBU OECH.

IBU OECH Opens: Slivko and Begue First Champions

Yesterday evening the Open European Championships in Otepää, Estonia kicked off with an official opening ceremony. Today on a cloudy and windy day, the juniors competed for the first medals in their individual competitions. Victoria Slivko of Russia and Aristide Begue claimed the first Gold medals winning the junior women and men's titles. Slivko had a single penalty, winning the 12.5K in 38:41.1. Later in the day, Begue was one of two junior men to shoot clean, taking his title in 39:522.1.

OECH Starts in Snowy Otepää

The Open European Championships in Otepaa, Estonia will open with junior individual competitions tomorrow. 33 nations registered here will participate in 15 competitions over 7 days; 122 men, 86 women, 82 junior men and 69 junior women will try to show their best on the tracks and on the shooting range to compete for the medals.

Antholz Wrap-up with Dasha and Simon

This final World Cup in January was marked by a few things: sunshine, Darya Domracheva, Simon Schempp and windy relays. Domracheva and Schempp were the big winners, taking the sprint/pursuit double which gave each of them a hat trick when last week's mass start is added in. The sun was out for every competition day; a rarity this season. However the weekend ended with storm-force winds bringing the women's relay to a halt on several occasions before Germany prevailed, as the Norwegian men did in the morning.

Germany Takes Wind-Blown Relay

Despite gale-force winds that made shooting a lottery at times, the German team of Franziska Hildebrand, Franziska Preuss, Luise Kummer and Laura Dahlmeier won the women's relay with two penalties and ten spare rounds in 1:18:47.9. Czech Republic with no penalties, but 15 spares finished 35 seconds back in second place with Ukraine in third , 45.3 seconds back with a three penalties and fourteen spares. Russia finished fourth, with France fifth and Belarus in sixth.
