|Training in Full Swing|
|Training for both the Russian men and women’s teams is in full swing as they are currently in the midst of their second camp of the new training season.|
Men at Raubichi
The men had their first camp last month at the iconic Raubichi training center just outside of Minsk, Belarus. As fitting the time of the year, the emphasis for this mid-May camp was on basic fitness. Men’s A Team Head Coach Nikolay Lopukhov commented, “During this training camp we have done some basic work, although I cannot say that this was rehabilitation training.”
After a couple of weeks training back at their homes, the group reassembled last week in Voukatti, Finland where they plan to take advantage of the ski tunnel. The big news from this camp is the return of Ivan Tcherezov, participating in his first camp since his serious fall and subsequent surgeries last fall. Tcherezov recently had the metal plate removed that had stabilized his severely broken leg. This extremely successful final surgery and quick recovery cleared him to rejoin the team.
Ruhpolding and Cyprus
While the men had their first camp at Raubichi, the women had a two-part camp during the middle of May in Ruhpolding and Cyprus. Again, the initial emphasis was on fitness with cycling, roller skiing and hiking with some more specific training also on the agenda. The whole team did not participate in this first camp, due to some illness and other issues but trained at home according to their individualized plans developed by Coach Wolfgang Pichler. The team is now in the middle of a second camp in Ruhpolding, where they continue to build strength and general fitness. The current camp ends this coming Saturday.
