|Joint Ski Camp with US Team on Tap|
|Spring and a new training season have arrived for the Canadian team in Canmore. Since the Canmore Nordic Centre still had enough snow cover and grooming was provided, the team started in early May with ski technique training right at home.
Running with Bears
With the arrival of spring and the melting snow also come the bears that are waking up from their winter hibernation. Several athletes were running through the forest a few days ago and met up with a black bear. The bear was not so interested, but the encounter reminded everyone the importance of being aware of your surrounding and not wearing earphones or listening to music while running, biking or roller skiing.
Canada-US Joint Ski Camp in Bend, Oregon
In the coming weeks, the team will travel to Bend, Oregon for a ski camp in conjunction with the US Biathlon team and the Canadian and Cross-Country teams.
Bend is one of the top spots for cross-country skiing in the spring as the trails on Mount Bachelor are regularly groomed well into June. At the same time, just several kilometers from the ski area, conditions are perfect for dry-land training where mountain bike and running trails abound in mild conditions.
Second Camp of New Season for USA
The Bend camp which starts on May 15 will be the second team camp of the new season for the USA. Coach Armin Auchentaler along with the resident coaches conducted a shooting camp in Lake Placid, NY earlier this month. US Coach Per Nilsson talked about the upcoming joint camp. “This camp in Bend is a cooperative effort between the US and Canada and our cross-country teams. It has been in planning for a while. We have several joint training sessions planned while we are there. Spring skiing is a great time to get in some good early season hours and work on technique.”
After the ski camp, the US team plans June and July camps at their home base in Lake Placid, before heading to Europe for an extended camp from mid-August to mid-September.
